issues

right so i finished the chair all was well in the world.. it supported weight, looked sweet and was all in all wicked seeing the locking system at the bottom was thrown together last min. i went off to sort out branding have something to eat and do some sporting design and work on some photoshoots i did during the week. when i came back to spray my stencil onto the chair though i noticed that there were stress points on the slotting system at the bottom. this is from a combination of things.

1 the hand cutting method i used meant that there was a slight perferation in the corners, (laser cutting will fix this issue)

2 slot was too close to the end therefore if i move it closer in to the fold there will be more material in between and all will be well in the world

combining these two solutions will result in a much better outcome

IF ONLY THERE WAS MORE XANITA AT MY DISPOSAL....

in the mean time i have added two smaller slots at the bottom to try take force off the first slotting system

cut out of 1200 x 1800 xanita

final design with branding

for the branding on the stool that is to sit in the break out areas at salone satellite i decided to carry through some of the bird imagery that can be seen at and around the 2008 expo. i have only kept the imagery small and on one corner though as not to draw too much attention to what is only meant to be event seating.

Trial of systems

here are a few pics of some trials of the blind dovetail grooves and folds that i used or tried to use in my model. as i said in the last post the dovetails would have worked apart from the way that the folds had to come in the locking system became too weak as it had to be forced past itself to lock in. the v- cuts became very hard to work out how much mass needed to be cut out with the unusual angles that i planned on using. as a result i went back to the formula i worked out on a previous post.

details from scrap

attempt one initially looked rather promising with all of the folds working as planned, until that is i came to the final locking system that holds the side flaps in place. the trial locking systems all worked fine however when i put it all together because it was the last connection and the way it folds in the dovetails had to be pushed in. this weakened the connections and they failed and let go. therefore back to the drawing board... unfortunatly i was hoping to get professional studio photos today but didnt make it.

branding ideas ptII

Im rubish at photoshop but thought i would play with it to get a bit of a mock up of some ideas and other branding for companies that could use the chair for other events

salon 2009

I just thought I would take a look at this years Salon seeing as though it took place half way thought the design process and make sure my design would still fit in to the surrounds of 09

Branding ideas

Photos of stencil graffiti I found around Melbourne

Silhouette of mainly birds that I could work from to brand my chair as the 2008 salone featured white silhouette birds on a green background

Some reusable wall stickers I found at design EX that could be used for inspiration for my branding

bend formula

folding methods from the xanita website

I had been struggling to try and figure out with the xanita board to get the angles of my cuts working properly. I couldnt get my head around how much material i needed to cut out to get my 130 degree bends so I went back to basics and researched how Xanita recomended folding the material.
